Can someone explain the beginning of the Greek - Persian conflict ?
Comments

Aside from just "all of Herodotus," the responses here are missing a few things. So here's the bullet point version.

  • C. 545 BCE - Cyrus the Great conquered the kingdom of Lydia, which had previously subjugated most of the Greek cities on the western coast of Anatolia. Most of the Greek cities resist Persia and are subjugated by Cyrus' generals after supporting a failed Lydian revolt.

  • C. 515 BCE - Darius the Great led an invasion of the Balkans for the first time, featuring the conquest of coastal Thrace, including the Greek cities there, Macedon, and a failed raid in force against the western Scythians.

  • 507 BCE - After ousting the tyrant Hippias with Spartan aid, Athens restored democracy against Spartan wishes. Sparta prepared to invade, and Athens sent ambassadors to get Persian aid. They got it on the condition that they submitted to Persian tribute. Sparta called off the attack. Athens refused to uphold the deal their ambassadors made with Persia.

  • 499-498 BCE - The Ionian Revolt began when the Ionian Greeks tried to throw off Persian rule with Athenian and Euoboean support. They burnt the Lydian capital at Sardis to the ground but got caught near Ephesus with heavy losses. Athens and Euoboea withdraw support.

  • 498-493 BCE - The Ionian Revolt continued, spreading into the Aeolic and Doric Greek cities in Anatolia as well as to Cyprus and possibly the Crimean Bosporus It also effectively cut off Persian rule in the Balkans. It took three Persian armies working in concert to end it.

  • 492 BCE - The young Persian general, Mardonius, allows the Ionians to govern their cities democratically so long as they pay tribute and re-establishes Persian rule in Thrace and Macedon. Herodotus frames this as a failed attempt to invade Greece, but that doesn't really make sense with the events described.

  • 491 BCE - Darius the Great sent messengers to find out which Greek cities might surrender willingly.

  • 490 BCE - Darius sent his generals on an island hopping campaign in the Aegean that successfully seized control of most of the islands but was defeated in mainland Greece at the Battle of Marathon. Herodotus portrays this as an attempt to conquer the Greek mainland again, but logistically and numerically, it may have been a punitive attack on Athens and Euoboea specifically.

  • 490-486 BCE - Darius prepared for a full conquest of Greece, the last independent region of economic importance in the eastern Mediterranean, but he died before the army was ready.

  • 486-484 BCE - Xerxes I came to power but had to redirect the military resources intended for Greece against rebellions in Egypt, Babylonia, and Bactria.

  • 484-481 BCE - Xerxes prepared for the invasion of Greece again.

  • 480-479 BCE - The full-scale Persian invasion of Greece
