I started fostering cats for my local shelter a few years ago as a way to help them be able to have more space to help animals in need. It was basically taking care of them while they took care of the adoption. However, in the last few years I've taken a few foster requests, mostly from ppl in Facebook, taking care of the adoptions and vet bills myself. Since then I've kept 3 cats I just absolutely fell in love with, and I sometimes struggle to fight the urge to foster fail, so I've given myself the rule of only keeping one cat of each color at a time (that ofc doesn't necessarily put a time limit to my fosters, just keeps me looking for adopters). Some ppl have told me it's a bit crazy, a friend told me it's cruel for the foster to go when it's doing well in my house just because I already have one of that color, so I would like to hear ppl's thoughts: am I wrong for having a "1 of each color at a time" rule?
Your "1 of each color at a time" rule isn't inherently wrong, but it might not be the best approach if it starts to limit the number of cats you can help. Fostering is about finding the right homes for the animals, and if a cat is thriving in your care but is held back just because of its color, it could be counterproductive.
If the rule helps you manage the emotional side of fostering and prevents you from keeping too many cats, it’s a reasonable boundary. However, if it’s preventing you from rehoming cats when they’re ready, it might be worth reassessing. Fostering is about the animals’ needs, and that should always be the priority.
