Last night, around 11:30, my roommate decided it was a good time to wash his shoes in the bathroom sink. I go in and he asks for another 5 minutes before I can use the sink to brush my teeth. I figure fuck it I want to go to bed now anyway so I take my toothbrush and toothpaste and brush/spit in the kitchen sink. When he realized, he blew up at me calling it gross and calling me unhygienic. I really don’t see what the big deal is so am I in the wrong? The only things in the kitchen sink are dishes he leaves overnight to “soak”.
You're not wrong for brushing your teeth in the kitchen sink, but it's understandable why your roommate was upset. The kitchen sink is generally seen as a place for food-related tasks, so using it for hygiene (even if it's just brushing your teeth) can feel gross to some people.
It’s a simple issue of shared space etiquette while it might not seem like a big deal to you, it might be uncomfortable for him. In the future, it might be better to wait a few minutes for the bathroom or find another private space to brush your teeth. It’s a small thing, but it’s worth having a quick chat to avoid any tension.
