What happens when an event causes extreme demand and AA overbooks? How many get bumped?

Post Body

I know this is hypothetical but I'm interested to hear any experiences.

This is my second post regarding the total solar eclipse in Mazatlan. Most seats within a 5 days of the eclipse were purchased the first week they were available. They are almost sold out now. This event isn't until next April.

Given that AA often overbooks, what happens when the one flight on April 4th is overbooked and passengers need to be bumped. They bump those passengers onto the April 5th fully booked, high turnout flight, plus the number of passengers overbooked on that flight.....next thing you know every April 7th passenger is bumped until who knows when.... I can see this turning into a snowball shitshow. Has anyone seen this happen?
