I am considering an Echo Dot for my bedside, but have some serious privacy concerns. How can I protect myself?

Post Body

Title says it all, I can see the advantages of having an Alexa device by my bed for alarms, night music, smart-switch enabled devices, etc. However, right or wrong, I am worried about being "listened in on" and have read enough horror stories (true or not) to where I am concerned for my privacy and overall safety. Is there a way that I can disable certain functions on it to calm my fears, or are my fears unjustified?
