Songwriter license, its not non fiction or documentary you are making :) I always assumed songs are 'inspired by a true story' rather than sticking to the facts. Robbie Robertson made a point of doing some research about the Civil War for the Night They Drove Old Dixie Down...he talks about that in several interviews.
