Are there any decent alternatives to Alpha Centauri?

I've tried many other 4x games. Civ, Stellaris, Beyond Earth. Some are good games, but nothing has been better than SMAC.
The story, the gameplay, the factions and leaders. Theres a feeling that the game captures, and even with 90s graphics and technology, the story is way more engaging and unique for me.
In case there might be something I've missed, have any fans of Alpha Centauri found a game that was as captivating for them?
