How do you keep as many leaves as possible?

My silver dragon came with six leaves, the dragon scale came with four, and I really don’t want to join the 3-leaf club. Is it mostly light? Making sure they’re getting enough nutrients? Consistent water? How do you keep them happy enough that they hold onto their leaves?
