My family member is an active alcoholic and just had surgery. She had a diverticulitis-like hole in her gut and was having pain. Turned out she lost a lot of blood, had blood coming out in her stool, she had to have a transfusion before her surgery, and also has some liver damage. She's only in her 30s. I'm now reading and learning about alcoholism so that I can help to support her through this recovery. She says she is ready to quit, and the doctors say that kuckily her liver isn't very heavily damaged. She'll need to be in the hospital for a few days, and they are giving her a medication to prevent rapid detox. I'm sorry if I've used the wrong terms for anything because this is all very new to me.
She had been in a toxic and abusive relationship and has been an alcoholic for a few years. We haven't been in touch for a while because she rejected all of her family and seemed to only want to be around people that wouldn't question her behavior.
I have a good friend that has been sober for 10 years that has offered to mentor me as a helper, and offered to pick up my sister and take her to meetings when she is ready. This seems like a solid gold resource to have and I'm so grateful for her willingness to talk to me and be of assistance.
I'm here in this sub to learn and if anyone has any advice for someone new to all of this, I welcome your input. I have a few sober friends that I'm so proud of for overcoming addiction and I'm proud of all the people in this sub that are fighting this fight. I've suffered with depression and am in therapy for my mental health, so I feel like I at least understand a lot of the language that comes with this kind of path. Thanks in advance for any advice and I wish you all well.
