Hi,
I have a friend who is an alcoholic. She says everyday she wants to quit, has had multiple DUIs, been to rehab, etc. She has been given phone numbers, resources, the works. Yet she âwill try to sober up later.â
Now, here is why I am asking for advice. I apologize if I sound frustrated in my tone, the reasons will appear later.
Every single day itâs ânew day letâs not drink today.â And I am supportive. I ask, âwhat action steps are you going to take?â And itâs always âlater or stuff.â Then itâs âI relapsed todayâ or âunderlying issues arenât helping.â When I suggest fixing them itâs âtried counseling for that not going back.â I have even gone as far as going with her to seek help. But she backs out always. It is evident she does not want to quit.
Everyday this routine happens. I feel like at this point I am wasting my energy and am mentally drained and done. I donât want to give up on my friend but I canât take this anymore. I give support she deflects and refuses to quit and asks for more support. I want to support but Iâm tired and out of options. Please send advice.
Thank you.
