I started working in a daycare in the end of June and I am doubting of the legality of certain actions that have been done by the owner. First I was asked to volunteer before starting to work. Some employees were asked the same from her and some were not. So unpaid work. I agreed at the time but I heard after that it might have been illegal. Unpaid overtime Unpaid staff meeting ( happened once and it lasted 2.5 hrs after the closing time) She made a white staff member read a racist rant from a parent in front of all ethnic staff.
There are also cameras everywhere and the owner listens to everything we say. She even brought up to a staff that was wishing to get pregnant "better not get pregnant" out of nowhere in person a few days later. She forbids the staff to speak any other language than English when they communicate together in the hallway without anyone else present. She even threatened them to use a translator to know what they were saying.
Her whole family have access to the cameras with sound which are showing in color with great definition. She even takes screenshots sometimes to complain about a room she deems messy. I never agreed to be recorded with audio on contract nor any other employee.
There have been more sketchy things going on with the childcare part. I am quitting because the toxic environment has taken a toll on my mental health. I really love the children with all my heart but it seems like they aren't the priority at all.
So what is legal and what is not? Thank you for anyone who will take the time to read.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the cameras are not a part of a parent app like hi mama. They are for the owners use only not for the parents to see their kids
