For those unfamiliar, "Uber Lime" and "Spin" are by far the two most significant electric scooter services in the United States. Their services involve electric scooters being placed across cities, and user's being able to access those scooters by scanning a qr code. Most American cities have this service in some form, but all of Alaska's cities (Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau) are an exception to this norm. The fact that there are no e-scooter services in Alaska makes no sense, and I'll explain why.
First there's Anchorage, with a population of about 290K in its city bounds and of about 400K in the metro area. There are cities all over the country with SUBSTANTIALLY smaller populations that have e-scooter services, so it makes no sense that Anchorage doesn't. Then there's Fairbanks, which has a population of about 32K in its city bounds and 100K in its metro area, smaller yes, but keep in mind that Fairbanks is a college town. People ages 18-25 have the most e-scooter usage BY FAR, so it would make perfect sense to have them in Fairbanks near UAF. The same logic exists with Juneau; its another college town with a similar population to Fairbanks (minus the metro area), and its also the capital of course, so it too would make sense as a location for e-scooter services to exist.
Idk why there's no e-scooter services from Uber Lime or Spin or other companies in this state, but there should be. All of Alaska's main cities have seen an increase in tourists over the past ten years, tourists that would obviously use e-scooters. Anchorage is massive and Fairbanks and Juneau are college towns, so it really doesn't make any sense that this state is completely void of e-scooter services.
Have you ever been to these places? I mean, yeah there's a college in Fairbanks and Juneau but I would never classify them as a "college town" in the traditional sense. And anchorage being "massive" isn't the positive thing you think it is for the town. It's massively spread out with very questionable roads and sidewalks. In the summer, maybe. In the winter there is absolutely no way it would be profitable.
