Most people know to stay off the mudflats, but PSA to stay off of these rock formations too.
Last night I watched this young man and girl (couldnât have been more than 10yo) climb up onto this rock in T. Arm as the tide was coming in. They werenât on the rock for 1-2 minutes when the stones they hopscotched across were covered with at least a foot of water.
Another group of people nearby warned them to get back, but by the time they got down to cross, the water was waist deep and rising rapidly. Thankfully the sea floor in this area was covered with scree, so getting stuck in the mud wasnât a huge problem. But the currents coming in on the forceful 32 foot tide could have easily washed them away.
I had 911 pulled up and was about 10 seconds away from calling, but thankfully they made it back to safety, clearly shaken over the incident.
Please refrain from any ânatural selectionâ themed remarks - weâre all thinking it. Just be aware of this lesser-known danger and educate your family, friends, and guests. For perspective, the rock they sat upon was completely submerged within an hourâs time.
Do NOT fuck around with the tides here. They are extremely dangerous.
