I babysit a pair.
I think dogs are bred to either:
A. Listen to humans for their next direction B. Be expected to use the intuitive instincts of their breed.
Those that fall in category B. (Great Pyrenees, Akitas, Alaskan Malamute) vs category A (Labrador, cavalier Spaniel, most toy breeds) will do what they think is best. It's the equivalent of asking for forgiveness instead of permission.
Once you learn that, all you have to do is figure out what reward will bring them over to your side.
