I now am the owner of a '77 Argosy 28. Needs paint, plumbing fixes and a lot of little stuff but all things considered pretty good for the price

I totally get that. When you're ready, most of those outer compartments (the hatches and the water fill) have a standard key from the factory which you can buy (as long as your PO didn't have them rekeyed). Here's the list of keys for different trailers, which will probably work for Argosys too. If they did have them rekeyed, the hatch locks can be removed. It's just a bolt on the back holding them in. I'm not sure about the water fill.
The other thing I wanted to clear up is that the white plug you described as a car plug actually goes to the trailer, while the black one you found attaches to the tow vehicle. I can't see the seven-way receptacle on the trailer that setup connects to, but I can send you a photo of mine so you know what to look for, if you want.
