I enlisted in November of 2022, and I want to eventually commission after I get a bachelors degree online. I thought I would be able to commission after a year or two at the unit, but my CC just told me at drill this week they require new enlistees to wait the whole 6 years of their contract if they want to commission.
I’m about to turn 33 in February and I would rather not wait a whole enlistment before trying to commission. I also love this unit, so I would love to stay with it.
I figured I’ll be waiting almost a year if not more for my TS clearance, and if I should just knock out a bachelors degree from a self-paced program at one of those for profit universities.
Also wondering if I’d be able to stop my enlistment and try to commission. One of the Captains said I could start the process to commission a year out from getting my bachelors, which would be coming up soon if I did the online program.
I would suggest talking to your local recruiter - there are sometimes officer-specific recruiters as well if your area has one. Your CC might be wrong or might be talking about something related to keeping your group or wing at certain manning levels.
In my experience, going after a commissioning opportunity is just like applying for any other job in the guard and if your unit doesn't have an E to O job, you'd have to leave your unit and that might be what your CC is talking about - you can't just up and quit an enlistment, although you can transfer before the end of your 6 years. I see it all the time.
