How often do I oil?

I got a crosman.22 caliber shockwave brake barrel rifle for Christmas. It has the nitro piston, whatever that means exactly. My question is how often do I oil that depression piston? The instructions did say to use silicon lubricant. Is that a must or a recommendation I don't know? I would appreciate anybody's bags on these. Thanks
