I'm a business analyst on a Lean/Agile product team. We used to be Waterfall, but are now pretty much 95% Agile. However, I've noticed that we are still expected to follow and care about industry trends in our market (a huge global industry like travel or entertainment). We're expected to set our team's product goals based on those trends and then work backward to the MVP and sprint planning. For example today we all had a meeting where one of the Marketing Analysts presented his market research where he charted past gains/losses and forecast future gains/losses in the industry. The gains/losses were for various variables in the industry: customer using similar products, things that impact our customers business, etc.
What I've noticed is that we are too busy pounding away at our current MVP, there's too much to do in the near term to even begin to think long-term. Are we supposed to dedicate one or two sprints each year to long term planning?
What do your teams do with this, or is this kind of long term market analysis and planning something that management should be doing?
