Hey everyone. I'm trying to narrow down my choices for an army to focus on for 4th edition AoS. Any advice other than "pick the one you like the look/lore of" is welcome as I have already taken this into consideration.
I've done a lot of thinking and a lot of bouncing back and forth among many armies since 2nd edition and I think I've finally narrowed down my requirements for an army that will fit me.
I really only have 4 rules that I want to follow:
- I want the rules to be simple. The more "unga bunga," the better.
- I don't want a wide range of models to buy/build an army with. The less choices, the better.
- No hordes. It doesn't have to be an elite army, but I definitely don't want to have to field more than 100 models to play the game and I don't want to play an army that has potential army builds that can field that many competitively.
- Easy to transport and move on the table // Minimal fiddly bits
I have ruled out the following armies and listed my reasoning. If you disagree, I would love to hear your reasoning:
- Cities of Sigmar - too many rules, too many options/ways to build the army/models to collect, unsure if horde or not
- Daughters of Khaine - too fiddly, too fragile in game
- Idoneth Deepkin - too fiddly, not a huge fan of the aesthetic
- Kharadron Overlords - too fiddly (especially the ships), not a huge fan of the aesthetic
- Lumineth Realm-Lords - the fiddliest of the fiddly of armies in AoS
- Sylvaneth - or are these the fiddliest of the fiddly of armies in AoS?
- Flesh-Eater Courts - typically horde army, not a huge fan of the older models
- Nighthaunt - or are these the fiddliest of the fiddly of armies in AoS?
- Ossiarch Bonereapers - models are too small, the larger models are too fiddly
- Soulblight Gravelords - way too many models on the tabletop
- Blades of Khorne - if they played like World Eaters in 40k I'd play them in a heartbeat
- Disciples of Tzeentch - not a fan of the models or general playstyle
- Hedonites of Slaanesh - models are too small/fiddly, not a fan of the older models (daemonettes, hellstriders, etc.)
- Maggotkin of Nurgle - not a huge fan of the aesthetic
- Skaven - horde army
- Gloomspite Gitz - horde army, models too small (love the trolls, but historically they haven't been great // current performance likely an anomaly)
- Ogor Mawtribes - will play them when they get a refresh assuming enough of the models are updated
- Kruleboyz - enjoy the aesthetic, but the general playstyle isn't my jam as they are a little too RNG reliant
- Sons of Behemat - all the models share the same pose, not diverse enough
I am considering the following armies:
- Stormcast - reduced model range with recent update, personally can ignore old units that haven't been updated prior to 3rd edition, rules seem simple enough, not a horde army
- Fyreslayers - small model range, rules seem simple, not sure how many models are typically fielded, but fairly certain they are not a horde army
- Seraphon - correct me if I'm wrong, but not a huge model range, not typically a horde army, but not sure if they are "unga bunga" enough for me
- Slaves to Darkness - mostly only into the heavily armored models (warriors, knights, varanguard, chosen) and the big characters (archaeon, belakor, abraxia), can mostly ignore all the old stuff, rules seem simple enough, not a horde army
- Ironjaws - big fan of the aesthetic, but unsure about rules. How reliant are they on RNG? Are they truly "unga bunga"?
Tl;Dr: I've narrowed down my choices to Stormcast, Fyreslayers, Seraphon (maybe), Slaves to Darkness, and Ironjaws (maybe). Please help me pick one or two to start my collection.
