Best weapons (of every kind) to upgrade?

I know it depends on which build you're using through the game but, I'm kinda curious: Which one do you think are the best weapons to upgrade and why? Swords, whips, katanas, etc, it doesn't matter. I'm sure they will be some of the late game weapons, but I wanna know what you think.
Btw, I haven't used this mechanic yet, so I wanna now your opinion to decide if I should upgrade the weapons I have or wait to get better ones. Thanks!
