Learning Afrikaans. How hard do I need to hit that g sound?

I'm having a tough time making the sound if I don't have enough spit in my mouth. Is it OK for it to come from the right place but not sound so wet? Like more of an airy sound? Does this even make sense? Thanks if anyone can help me out.
