How do you find a mentor and questions

I've been playing the game for about 3-4 days and applied to a bunch of mentors but none will accept.
I just want to get the easy quests done, and then they can kick me XD
Are the quests like pull 100 times retroactive? (I wasted almost all my gems already doing pulls)
