People often thought I was joking or being a contrarian when I say Breezy is one of my top 10 episodes of the entire series but I meant it. It's also one of my favorite pieces of western animation ever.
Season 6 is my favorite season of Adventure Time. It's weird, it's philosophical, and most importantly it let its characters deal with issues that we never really saw in a serious limelight before. Like depression, loneliness, and betrayal. The older I get the more I vibe with it because it's so much more "grown up" than anything before. That also leads into why I love Breezy as much as I do.
When I was 18 I thought this episode was boring. It involved Finn going around kissing a bunch of ladies then a cop out ending where he gets his arm back at the end, when they been building up him losing it since season 5. That's what the young me thought.
When I rewatched the episode again at 24, and had lived a little more, I suddenly saw a different episode. I saw an episode where Finn : After suffering from great loss, trauma, and deep loneliness tries to use physical connections to fill a void in his heart. It suddenly made sense because I had been there before.
Love in the Darkness is one of my favorite adventure time songs, on the same level as I Remember You. Seeing Finn remember what it was to just love someone for the sake of loving them, not to fill a void, not wanting a physical connection, just being unafraid to fill joy in his heart because of someone he thinks the world of was a beautiful moment.
Seeing him get out his slump and get his arm back because he found a way to make himself whole again and allowing himself to move on from his father, with love restored to his heart is one of my favorite endings to any episode of any show.
I feel this episode deserves revisiting and I'm glad it's gotten new discussion in its favor. I think now that the Fandom has aged a bit and they learned to appreciate this episode more like I learned to.
