It’s always been like this. Pretty sure Pendleton or one of the storyboard artists said it was supposed to be him trying to pose/smile for the camera but accidentally doing an awkward face like a bad school photo

That’s a super cool theory!! But Ice King being Simon wasn’t something that was planned from the start :/ The writers even said so themselves. I’ve been watching the show since the pilot and I used to ask the writers questions on Formspring and I specifically remember them saying he was just making a funny face in the intro but I can’t find it anywhere. I guess I don’t have any sources to back myself up haha but it’s no secret that Simon was not the plan from the start. It’s still a super cool story though
