I was diagnosed at age 8 with “ADD” as they called it back then. My parents didn’t believe the doctor so they never attempted to get therapy for me or medicate me, however I was always absolutely sure that the doctor was right. At age 30, I got myself reevaluated. Lo and behold, I was diagnosed with ADHD. I felt so validated after all the years of being told I just suffered with anxiety and depression.
After getting my adult diagnosis, I educated my parents. My parents are very progressive people and have softened over the years, especially after my youngest sibling (17 years age difference) was diagnosed with AuDHD.
I then, as the eldest sibling, educated my other siblings as they display almost ALL of the same sensory issues that I do. Two of them went and got evaluated and both have ADHD.
My parents did the same and mom has adhd and dad is on the spectrum.
I have one sibling that has not gotten tested, but she believes, as do the rest of us, that she is also very likely AuDHD.
Anyone else??
I’m now a mother of three with an ADHD partner and we have 1/3 confirmed with ADHD.
Side note: I now understand all of my mother‘s meltdowns growing up and can forgive her. I am SO grateful to be educated so that I can talk to my children about my difficulties rather than the ragey outbursts that my mother had, which always felt directed at us kids.
It makes wonder who’s actually the divergent one here?
