L-tyrosine timing and considerations?

Post Body

Hello all,

I think this is my first post in this particular sub, but strangely it seemed more suited to here than any of the usual drug-related subs I frequent, so I thought I'd give it a shot. It's not completely about Adderall in particular, but I am seeking to facilitate bouncing back from short-term moderate overuse of pharmaceutical amphetamines (Vyvanse, dextroamphetamine ER/spansules, and IR Adderall) in general.

We're probably all at least passingly familiar with the advice given to take l-tyrosine after amph binges or during med holidays to help replenish monoamine neurotransmitters. I'm aware of this, but know few actual specific details about it as I've heretofore always been able to keep my use within relatively moderate therapeutic bounds and with all the other steps in my regimen, my schedule, etc. keep tolerance sufficiently low. Unfortunately, with the cumulative extreme stress this year has brought for me, a precipitating incident a couple weeks ago which knocked me off center and various other circumstances, this is no longer the case--I've slipped, leaned on the amphetamines a little too hard, and now, alas, my tolerance is high enough that my prescribed amphs aren't working at reasonable dosages, I'm in the beginning of that well-known self-defeating cycle and I know that my alternate, much milder stimulant (armodafinil) isn't going to be remotely adequate to stave off the withdrawal/rebound symptoms when I take my tolerance break. So I need to take l-tyrosine now. I'm frankly too dysfunctional at the moment to do my usual independent research and reading up on the matter to figure this out for myself, so I have these questions I was hoping someone might be able to answer with well-explained information:

  • Is it safe/advisable to take l-tyrosine: a.) on the same day (such as the last day before a break) as one has taken amphetamines, say, at the end of the day when they're wearing off? Will doing so send me into a dysphoric state, pose any other significant risks I should know about, or keep me up or make me anxious (given that tyrosine itself is said to have a very mild alertness-enhancing effect at first, IIRC)? b.) With other meds such as armodafinil (alternate stimulant to prevent going into full unmitigated amphetamine withdrawals), pregabalin, low-dose dextromethorphan (to possibly help reset tolerance via NMDA antagonism), antihistamines (chlorpheniramine, etc.), etc.? Is there some mechanism through which l-tyrosine taken concurrently with such drugs could pose a problem, interact negatively or cancel/nullify their efficacy?

  • When is the best time to take l-tyrosine--upon awakening, in the middle of the day, or before bed--and are there any times throughout the day when it's best not dosed?

I'd appreciate any other details or advice about taking l-tyrosine in this context anyone would care to share, as well. Thanks.
