Hi all!
I'm new to the access control/security industry, having been recruited a few months ago with the intention of training me to cover all aspects of our CCTV & access control systems from installation to management.
Unfortunately, frustratingly, and for reasons outside of my control this training is yet to materialize.
My company is fine with my progress so far but I can't stand being inefficient/underutilized, so I've decided to take matters into my own hands. Which is where I hope you lovely people come in!
What kind of (hopefully inexpensive) courses, skills, experiences, or information would be useful to educate myself on independently?
So far I'm working on:
- A course on general electronics,
- SSCP certification prep,
- The free manufacturer training for our access control /cctv suites.
- Database management,
- Setting up a workbench to experiment with.
What else could be useful? Is there any kind of physical course (e.g Carpentry) that would be worthwhile?
I know there's no substitute for shadowing a co-worker and real-world experience, but there must be something I can do to compensate for their absence.
Thank you for your time!
p.s, As far as regulations go I'm in the UK, but as long as the information is good I don't mind where it comes from.
Call all of the reps of the manufacturers you sell and tell them you want to learn their product so you can sell it. Many will inundate you with good learning material. Some will even spend 30-60 minutes giving you a demo and an opportunity to ask questions. A couple won't answer you but that's because manufacturers reps sometimes don't do their jobs(I can say that because I am one lol). But if you keep in touch with them and (can't stress this enough) BRING THEM IN ON JOBS you will be successful. If you try to go it alone and learn by youtube videos and books you will be majorly lacking in knowledge. Also join IPVM, you'll hear mixed reviews from people about it but they're the only ones doing head to heads and integration checks and shit like that.
If you're willing to spend a couple bucks Vector Firm is one of the best training companies in the security industry.

One last thing when I said bring them in on jobs that's because they are already experts on their product so use that to your advantage. They want the sell just as bad as you and they're willing to join you for an end user demo where you don't know anything other than let's say that it's a cloud video company. Do that like 10 times and you will also be an expert in that solution. Good luck, Hooah!
