Do you need identification (passport) for tourism in Abu Dhabi?

I have one day lay-over between my flights in Abudhabi and so I plan to tour the Abudhabi city.
But always worried about losing my passport !! So was wondering if I need any ID for doing touristy things ?
I plan to visit the Grand Mosque, Louvre, Emirates Palace and some shopping malls.
