Mod Announcement #2 - AsianBeautyNetwork & The Future
Post Body

Hi everyone!

12 days ago, we were at 2.6k subscribers, today we are at 3.5k! That’s huge! We’re so excited in this growth and the thought provoking and interesting discussions that have sprouted in such a short time.

Do you like the new CSS? /u/smallrobots is a beautiful wizard and put this together while I was sleeping. If you see any issues or areas of improvement, please let us know!

Asian Beauty Network

As the Reddit Asian Beauty community grows, it has become increasingly obvious that a single catch all subreddit no longer fits the needs of the community.

r/abdiscussion was created to be a thoughtful discussion oriented space, and was always intended to be a companion subreddit. That's why we’re really happy to work together with a group of dedicated moderators to be part a network of subreddits that allows you to create the perfect AB Reddit experience for you.

Each space caters to a different need, you can find them all here with an explanation of what each subreddit focuses on.

There’s also a multireddit feed which can be found here that you can copy, save and edit!

With that in mind, this post will outline how we intend to manage Reviews, Help Threads and The Wiki on ABDiscussion.

Reviews

Reviews are back, with a format and a dedicated weekly thread! Thank you to /u/rumazazil for the initial template.

Alongside Asian Beauty Reader’s Digest Monday, Monday will also feature a Review Thread! Each month, we will have a Monthly Review thread based on a central theme based on an interesting discussion topic raised by the community.

Reviews using the review structure are encouraged in the ‘Ingredients and Studies Tuesday’, ‘Makeup Discussion Wednesday’ and ‘Miscellaneous AB Thursday’ Weekly threads.

Format

  • Full Product Name:
  • Skin Type/Skin Tone/Current Climate:
  • Reason for Use:
  • Product Size & Price:
  • Packaging:
  • Ingredients:
  • Product smell, texture & finish:
  • Product effects compared to claims:
  • Where it fits in the routine & how it behaves with other products:
  • How long it has been used for:
  • Has it been/will it be repurchased:
  • Concluding remarks:

example:

  • Full Product Name: Neogen Bio-Peel Gauze Peeling Lemon
  • Skin Type/Skin Tone/Current Climate: Oily, acne prone, humid and cold.
  • Reason for Use: For gentle exfoliation
  • Product Size & Price: Box of 8 pads, price unknown as it was a sponsor gift.
  • Packaging: Individually wrapped pads in a foil pouch. I really like this set because it makes it easy to carry around for overnight stays or on the plane.
  • Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Alcohol Denat., PEG/PPG017/6 Copolymer, Sodium Hyaluronate, Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract , Cymbopogon Citratus Extract, Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Tricholoma Matsutake Extract, Cordyceps Sinensis Extract , Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Pisum Sativum (Pea) Extract, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Fruit Extract, Saururus Chinensis Leaf/Root Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Artemisia Absinthium Extract, Broussonetia Kazinoki Bark Extract, Coptis Chinensis Root Extract , PEG-60 Hydrogenated Cator Oil, Carbomer, Tartaric Acid , Glycolic Acid , Lactic Acid , Tromethamine, Disodium EDTA, Benzophenone-5, CI 19140, CI 17200, Fragrance
  • Product smell, texture & finish: It smells like lemon, which is really off putting as I've had lemon = bad drilled into my head. It leaves a sticky finish but you have to wash it off.
  • Product effects compared to claims: Claims - "this product provides gentle yet effective exfoliation of dead skin cells and impurities, leaving skin smoother and clear." Sure, I guess? It's gentle, but I didn't think it left it particularly smoother than any of my regular acid products.
  • Where it fits in the routine & how it behaves with other products: I use it as my acid step after cleansing, but it's a wash off acid, so you have to bear that in mind.
  • How long it has been used for: I've used two pads so far.
  • Has it been/will it be repurchased: Has not been repurchased, and will not be repurchased.
  • Concluding remarks: I like them well enough and I'm glad I got to try it because those tubs have been super inviting, and I've been lemming HARD. But honestly it just hasn't wowed me to make me want to use it often. Especially as I have to wash it off, which is like, WHY. This is effort, I don't see a huge change and compared to the Innisfree Green Barley Peeling Pad, it's pretty meh. What I will say is that you can use it as a body pad just before a shower which is actually not bad because it is mega mega soaked in product.

If there are other points you think should be included in the template or removed, please let us know.

Help Threads, Asking for Advice & The Wiki

For the foreseeable future we will not have help threads. The daily threads are discussion threads, not help threads, so while advice has been freely given we want to make it very clear that no member of the community is obligated to give advice or help anyone. Every discussion topic should feel like a slumber party where you're talking stuff out with your friends. Advice should be part of an organic discussion.

Instead of, “I'm NW15, should I buy The Face Shop Super Ultra Cool to the MAX in 13?”

Try, “It's summer and I've seen a lot of cooling cushions around that make me really curious. Do they work? I have no idea! I read this review that said they do and this one that says they don't. My NW15 skin thinks they're a gimmick, but I'm tempted to get this The Face Shop Super Ultra Cool to the MAX in 13 I found on Peony Peony Store. Anyone tried any cooling products from this line?”

Please remember, if you can easily do an internet search for the answer, you should do so, not expect anyone else to do it for you.

As r/AsianBeautyAdvice have awesome plans for a wiki, we will not be curating one in the traditional sense.

Other Points:

Flairs

There is also no need for post flairs as everything should be a discussion!

Other than no self promotion (ie no link to your blog/external platform) we have no restrictions on personal flairs. Skin type, location and skin tone are common flair content, but you can also have fun with it as long as it isn’t offensive.

An example of suitable flairs would be:

  • Snail enthusiast
  • Dry/Sensitive Skin | Australia
  • NW20 | Passionate about AB makeup!
  • Tony Moly Banana Pack needs more love

Blogger, Businesses & External Content Creators:

No shameless self promotion and no stand alone threads centered around your content. All content creators must follow a 10:1 rule, where for every post of self promotion (ie, relevant link to external content in a discussion post) there must be 10 posts that have nothing to do with themselves or their brand.

If you are a blogger or external content creator you are expected to participate as any other member of the community, there will be no special flair given.

Business Rules:

Business representatives who are hoping to post on behalf of their business (ie, clarify ingredient list, or use of product) must first identify themselves to the moderators and they will be given a special flair. Failure to do so will result in all unverified ‘official’ posts being removed.

Basically, you have to prove you’re posting on behalf of Jolse before we let you post on behalf of Jolse.

Next Steps:

We are looking for new mods! Horray!

US Timezone preferably as I am in the EU and /u/smallrobots is in AUS.

We are looking for 3 mods:

  • 1 CSS Dedicated mod, has no other responsibilities.
  • 3 to help with the day to day moderation.

This involves clearing out the spam queue, moderating to the rules and responding to modmail.

If you are interested please send us a modmail with the title, “ABD Mod Application” with a little bit of information about yourself and why you think you would be a great mod!

Thank you!

That's it for now, thank you guys for all your feedback, we are always listening and we are always working to make ABD the best space we possibly can. New rules take effect immediately, and the sidebar will be updated to reflect that from tomorrow.

As always, the comments are open for your comments! We'd love to hear from you to explain, clarify or just discuss your thoughts!
