Checklist / Suggestions for Good Contract Writing
Post Body

Make any dates, durations, locations, etc. clear if relevant. For example, I want a delivery every week of logs at some price. Make sure to say how many weeks, unless you want it to last FOREVER. Also what if logs change prices? You may want a medium length contract to allow you to re-evaluate your prices later when it ends.

Don't sign blank checks. For example, don't agree to your side of a deal in your post before you even know who will take you up on it (for a sale, etc.). You always want to know who you're getting into business with and the details first. You can always back out before you sign, but not after.

Take into account delivery of any items including payment, in your contract. Don't get stuck making a trip across the world for free because you forgot to build in expenses.

Specify the penalty for either side breaking the contract. If you don't, then if you try to pearl a contract breaker, the sentence will be disputed, and there will be a whole mess, and you might even get pearled, etc. If the penalty is clearly outlined, this is much less likely.

Include concrete examples for any math, subjective stuff, or abstract concepts

Think about loopholes and try to close them if you can.

Before you enter into a contract with anybody, ask yourself "Would I be physically and profitably able to punish them / collect the debt if they broke the contract?" Bounty hunters are well and fine, but nobody will take a bounty on certain individuals. And some people have friends who may come and try to murder you, possibly successfully, even if you're obviously in the right. Even for a normal person, consider how long it might be or not until you'd actually get paid, as well as the cost of the bounty, which you don't get back. You should only sign contracts with people who:

  • don't have private armies (unless you have a bigger army)

  • aren't likely to just quit the game anytime soon

  • are not hiding in a cave somewhere already impossible to find

  • aren't going to cost you more to punish than you would expect to profit from the contract

  • etc.

MOST people on the server are just fine and don't fit any of the above criteria. Just stop and think for a second, that's all.
