Course: Introduction to Comparative Governments Source: Comparative Politics Today (a world view) 10th edition G. Bingham Power, JR. Russel J Dalton. Kaare strom. Grade: 100%

As you read through the Chapter, focus on these five questions and complete them using the recommended format below. The responses must reflect full coverage of the chapter.

  1. Premised on the information on the widespread want for communism through China’s history how does one explain that they were willing to have capitalism or free market at the same time?

  2. Given the fact that Mao was openly persecuting people of opposing views what are the outcomes of persecution in China today? (what kind of punishment can you expect? If any for minor offenses?)

  3. The chapter states that a lot of communism was borrowed from Lenins ideas in the past how then is China influenced today of Russia?

  4. There is a clash between the government and the young technologically savvy Chinese today. They try to limit websites like Youtube from the population but most Chinese youth knows how to bypass this. I wonder if there is going to be another shift coming up here with my generation in the future. Please Elucidate.

  5. Please elaborate. With the world ever shrinking with the globalization that is happening and the widening spread of the internet there is no way that the Chinese youth are getting influenced by other governments and seeing how they work in the free world. The people coming up with my generation and younger must have differing views of the past generations and I wonder if we will see a dynamic shift in political views and foreign relations in the near future. Now, formulate two questions of your own

a. Why do you think incomes are three times higher in Urban areas than of Rural?

b. Most of the changes made by Chairman Mao is undone in China today. How does the Chinese relate to Mao? Is he revered, hated or forgotten or what are thoughts of him today?

20 Terms Definitions 1) Central Committee (of the communist party of China) Highest authority, has people from all branches of government

2) Communist party of China Sole governing party in china that works alongside 8 other parties

3) Confucianism Philosophical idea sometimes described almost like a religion. Made from teachings of a chinese philosoper of the same name

6) Cultural revolution (China) The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, movement intended to enforce communism in 1966

7) Democracy Movement Political parties that were against the one-party rule by the communist party

8) Authoritarianism Blind obedience to authority, giving up individual freedom

9) GONGO Government Organized Non-Governmental Organization.

12) Great Leap Forward Led by Mao, a campaign led to transform the economy to communist society (caused the Great Chinese Famine)

13) Hu Jintao Credited with making China a major world power. Brought economic growth to China for almost a decade

17) Nationalist Party Also known as Kuomintang. Advocates to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the republic

20) Politburo Interestingly a Russian word. Means executive committee for political parties.

Significant Details

Keep the responses as concise as possible. The twenty must significant details that I experienced in this chapter include:

  1. To agree to have capitalistic views and communism under one country is an interesting idea.

  2. Mao being a peasant and rising up to the highest body is amazing!

  3. China has openly declared capitalist open markets as the superior method for economic growth

  4. Today its not as much in line with communism as it is open market socialism

  5. The government in China today is closer to Authoritarianism than it is Totalitarianism whether that is intentional or not is unclear

  6. China is working to make itself more transparent and less corrupt, it seems like they want to improve in the eyes of its citizens

  7. China’s population is wanting and getting more localized government and less centralist movement

  8. China is now the worlds second largest economy, after united states

  9. most money is in the city with urban incomes are 3 times as high as those of rural equivalents

  10. In China today surprisingly very little is left of the Maoists era

  11. Chinese civilization emerged more than 6000 years ago, America wasn't even thought up back then

  12. Confucianism is a conservative theory

  13. China learned a great deal about communism from Russia

  14. Aid was sent from the Soviet Union but not in forms of monetary funds but in sending thousands of engineers to china and let many Chinese go to Soviet Universities

  15. in 1950s 1-3 million Chinese were persecuted for having other ideological beliefs than the government. All executed.

  16. The Great Leap cost China untold millions in lost productivity

  17. Some lower political groups made people “struggle” camps where they would force people to work to death for having opposing views. Many died and some killed themselves.

  18. There are 55 recognized ethnic minorities in China

  19. Lenin justified China having a monopoly of power that China adopted making a party-state

  20. National peoples congress is China’s legislature Individual Impact Which individual or concept in this chapter had the greatest impact on your knowledge gains? Explain in a well constructed paragraph—at least five sentences
Having people and millions at that persecuted for not having the arbitrarily set views as communist is crazy. I wonder how many untold millions died one way or another to persecution of people. Mao seems like a power hungry dictator and openly challenged anyone who stood in opposition of him.

  21. Which section of this Chapter would you like the professor to go over with the entire class? Go over what happens to the Chinese if they have other views today, are you persecuted or is it looked down on or embraced?
