This post rambles a bit, but post below about your interests/activites/etc relating to permaculture, plants, and nature. :)
In an 'unexpected' twist, I have noticed many within technology industries showing interests in permaculture, growing food, homesteading, self-sufficency, and simply "When I have enough money, I want to buy some land out in the country, grow plants that I like, and be left the F#(& alone." Those farthest away from the (second) oldest industry, are perhaps the most intrigued by it as well. Others I have talked to want to build underground structures and rooms to avoid taxes, prying eyes, and interference by government entries.
Another similar observation I've had is that permaculture is a simple technology which is could, in theory, allow poor persons to feed themselves without any outside assistance and minimal investment. It requires a certain some basic knowledge, and an initial investment of resources (less than $2k), but even within a small space, one can grow an impressive amount of food.
Better yet, home-grown food is almost always many times more delicious than what you can buy from the grocery store. If I was a busy software developer making good money, and could buy home-grown food, I'd pay a premium for it.
I've imagined for quite some time that the way to escape "welfare" and "the state" is to simply provide a means for self-sufficiency, and I think Permaculture may present one of those means. Perhaps it doesn't make people rich, but it would at least provide a means for millions to avoid starvation and severe poverty.
