So I’ve been testing the 2022 G15 3070Ti 6900HS model today (video on the way) and there are definitely more changes to the 2022 model than I previously thought, but a lot of it is software and small tweaks.
I’ll go ahead and reveal some first impressions here as the video will take some time to make.
Pros: - Webcam finally - Mux switch! - Trackpad somehow feels better, idk how to explain it. The click just feels so nice now. - Performance on battery is super nice (haven’t tested battery life yet though) - Almost zero screen bleed, perfect functionality, no QC issues - GPU almost always stays above 110 watts under load, pushing 110-119 usually for me - Screen seems brighter? - Thermals seem good so far
Weird stuff/Cons/Needs Updating:
So first off, Turbo mode in Armoury Crate is LOUD (56-57dB). Turbo mode is now just MAX fans under load whereas before it was probably close to 70% fans on 2021 model. The weird thing is that this comes with almost zero benefit. Manually adjusting fans to around 60-70% produces maybe a 1 fps difference, sometimes no difference in performance but cuts fan noise WAY down (50-52dB). 5-7 dB is a huge difference in perceived loudness. Temps do rise by a few degrees but nothing concerning.
Performance mode in Armoury Crate is now just kinda garbage. Huge loss in performance, GPU takes a big hit, but it is fairly quiet.
The mux switch is… wonky. I think. Every laptop I’ve used with a mux switch, when it’s in dGPU mode, the integrated graphics (iGPU) is nowhere to be found and doesn’t show in device manager because it’s disabled, as it should be. Here on the 2022 G15 when dGPU mode is active, AMD Radeon is still right there in Device Manager and Radeon can still be opened in system tray. iGPU shows that it’s pulling watts in Radeon activity monitor but at the same time shows 0% usage. There is also barely any difference in performance between the two so far. So idk if this is a glitch or if it needs to be updated, but something isn’t right here.
NVIDIA Control Panel also is weird in dGPU mode. I’ll go into more detail later. But I was investigating through using an external monitor and things are definitely off. Gained about 400 CPU score in Time Spy by just being in hybrid mode and plugged into external monitor to manually bypass Optimus…. Strange.
This Best Buy model (GA503RW) is nowhere to be found on Asus’ website or drivers page so MyASUS is the only way to check drivers.
Side Notes: I believe mismatched ram will make even less of a difference with DDR5. Each stick runs in dual channel independently. I already bought a 16gb stick for 24gb total. Will test it after I’ve finished testing everything else.
Can anyone with a 2021 G15 go into a game and put their hand near the screen fan exhaust and tell me how much air comes out of it onto the bezel? I think they reduced the amount of air released from there on the 2022 somehow because it feels like a VERY small amount of air when I put my hand there. I just want to confirm.
