Hey guys, looking for a little help from someone who would know more than me (probably most of you, but I’ll take any help your willing to give). Little backstory to explain better...

(Skip this next section if you don’t care about the backstory. It’s not super important, just why I’m asking my questions.)

Backstory

So, I started playing the TCG when the first starter decks hit American shelves (got my Kaiba deck from k-mart, I’m that old)(no, this isn’t an “old man mad at state of game” post). My friends and I became enamored with a card called “Chaos Emperor Dragon” early on because it was reported as being so broken that it was pretty much instabanned. I never got one myself, but it was a popular topic in my group before I quit playing.

Here I am today, playing ranked matches, when I decided I want to go and plan some new deck ideas. I’ve got two decks that do great already, but I like to switch things up every so often and play something else. Remembered that chaos dragon, so I figured I’d look for him for nostalgia. Turns out he isn’t banned anymore, is only a rare card, and even has a retrain pendulum version now! Even better, I find that Chaos has become an entire subset of cards (listen, I was out of the loop from around when GX first aired all the way to Duel Links, give me a break... lol). So I look up some chaos decks to see if anything would work, but all I’m finding are super old “chaos lightsworn” decks that are basically your typical lightsworn with a levanianeer dragon mixed in for spice. Nah son, if I’m going chaos, I’m GOING CHAOS.

My Questions

So, basically I have two questions for the community;

• Is the Chaos subtype even viable? Has it ever been viable? Would spending resources and time on a chaos deck be a total waste? I’m not planning on shaking up the meta, but I also don’t want to go in on a deck that’ll never work outside of silver rank.

• If I should go forward with making a chaos deck, would anyone in the community be willing to help me theorycraft it? Maybe we can hop into a discord or reddit chat and see if we can’t come up with something competent enough to work well. Best case scenario, we change the meta of master duel forever.... more likely scenario, we bullshit about a rouge deck for a bit, lol.

What is “Chaos” subtype?

For those that aren’t sure what I’m talking about, the chaos cards are an interesting subset of monsters that require you to banish one light and one dark monster to summon. I say subset because they are spread out across various packs, sets, and even archetypes. The trade off for the limiting summon cost is that they tend to have pretty intense effects.

From letting you special summon monsters, to banishing enemies, to removing backrow, all the way up to destroying your opponent’s entire field and hand in one move.... they can be insane. But they need a very specific setup, hence why I’m asking for some theorycrafting partners.

• Examples: Chaos Dragon Levianeer, Chaos Ruler, Chaos Emperor Dragon, Chaos Creator, etc.

Why not just use the Lightsworn version?

I looked through some of them. Lightsworn May very well be the best way to run a chaos deck, but most of them that I found are super old and wouldn’t do well against the upper half of Master Duel Meta right now. A lot of new things have come out since many of those decks were made, so I’m hoping to maybe incorporate some of the master duel tactics into it. For example, most chaos cards don’t have much protection, the lightsworn decks don’t give them much to stay alive either... in the current standard, that’s bad. Like, REALLT bad. My precious chaos dragons would be dead the second they arrive. Not to mention the decks I’ve seen don’t focus too much on banishment, which is basically the entire thing with chaos cards, so I’d like to see if I can exploit that somehow.

Basically my goal is just to modernize chaos a bit, see if I can’t find something that works well in the current environment.
