This weekend our group of 12 is attempting a long, 22-mile day hike along Yosemite's south rim, ascending the Pohono Trail from Tunnel View eastward for 13 miles to Glacier Point, linking to Panorama and descending the JMT-Mist trails for another 9 miles down to Happy Isles.
Is this realistic, given the historic conditions?
We know that everywhere above snowline still carries 5 ft. of snow, and that we need to have microspikes/traction at a minimum. The trails all appear open and navigable though.
My concerns are whether we have the stamina, and if descending down JMT-Mist will be too slippery and dangerous at the end of the day.
Would this trail be better/easier to do going east to west, descending on the Pohono side? Any other advice?
(As background, our crew has done a similar day hike at the last historic snow year of 2017, going up Yosemite Falls Trail to North Dome Trail back down with Snow Creek Trail. It was grueling, but doable. We didn't need spikes/traction for that one.)
