Ok so we all know Dylan went to film school and doesn’t recommend it (I think) and I’m just not sure if I should do it or not.
For context, I’m currently 21 years old. I recently completely a degree an a separate field which I do not plan on going into at all (I actually despise that program it was sooo boring and I think I lost all my brain cells and academic abilities). I’ve always been very interested in film, when I was younger I was interested in acting and just the film industry in general. I decided not to pursue it out of highschool because I was worried about lack of stability and money over interest, but now that I’ve been in university for a while I just feel like I need to spend my life doing something I’m interested in. I feel like I wasted years of my life on a degree I don’t care about.
My university also provides a film studies program and I have the majority of credits already so the only credits I have to take are ones that go YouTube major which would be finished in 2-3 years. I was told by an advisor that I had a good chance of getting into that program as long as my grades were at a certain point which they are. Currently I’m planning to get accepted for winter 2024 (as I missed the deadline to apply for fall), with the fall semester taking some courses that will give me a taste of the program and increase my gpa.
Anyways tonight I was just going through the reviews for these courses and they weren’t great seemed like a lot of writing and whatnot, which is expected but it got me thinking about if i really want to spend 3 more years in school writing bad papers and making myself miserable even though the content would be more interesting (I just hate writing and I’m not good at it either). I’m still considering doing this because I think it would be interesting and Iay actually enjoy academia a bit more but I’m also wondering if it would be better to just stop school and just work instead. I live in a film city so there are opportunities but I just don’t know if I would get any of them. I just don’t know.
Wondering what y’all think or if anyone has been in a similar experience!!
