Do Season 1 contrived situations continue?

6 episodes into season 1 and the son has happened upon: a bear, a meth lab, rapists. The wife just got knocked out breaking up a fight.
I like the show, but they keeping coming up with artificial things to happen to move the plot. Does the clumsy writing go away?
