Any advice for working with super rough wool?

Hi friends!

I recently bought an absolutely massive (900g) cone of yarn online. I originally intended to use it with my knitting machine, but unfortunately, my machine doesn't handle it well. I'd obviously like to use my 900 grams of beautiful yarn, but it is INCREDIBLY rough on the hands. It's a very old school, rustic wool that looks gorgeous, but I feel like if I knit or crochet with it for more than two minutes, my hands will get rug burn. Any advice for dealing with this? It's one of the prettiest yarns I've ever found and I'd hate for it to go unused.
