I was on my lunch break and coming out of a Vietnamese food place which is located on a very Somali road: it is basically where all the Somali businesses in the area are located. I always see Somalis around. They tend to be middle aged though. This Somali woman stopped me. She looked mid to late 30’s. She asked me if I was Ethiopian. I said no. I get it a lot. I asked if she was. She said she’s Somali. She asked if I know Nimco and said I look like her sister or something. I said no. She said I never see Somali women without hijab on this road and she got her fist out for a spud and I spudded her lmao. It is really rare to see a Somali woman without a hijab in this part of London. I have a friend who is in her late 20s. She is a non hijabi and wears western clothing but she is careful how she dresses if she is frequenting the businesses on this road. Her family live locally. I don’t change anything about my dress because my family don’t live around there so shaqo laan Somalis will not be talking to them and it is London - not Saudi Arabia. It was uplifting because I don’t tend to interact with the Somalis on that road because they are all adeers and aunties who I know will not accept me for who I am 🤷🏾♀️.
