Xmage won't open

At the behest of an internet friend of mine, I have attempted to download Xmage. Whenever I click on the launcher, rather than, say, nicely opening and starting up the program, it asks me what app I want to open it with. I am perfectly willing to chalk this up to me being a computer-illiterate idiot, but that doesn't change the fact that the damn thing won't work.
In case it helps, the launcher just looks like a blank document on the desktop.
