At the end of the title sequence where "the truth is out there" usually comes up, it says "dio to ama" which I believe is Spanish or possibly Italian or "god loves you". The more I see this episode it seemed obvious that burt Reynolds character was supposed to be a manifestation of God. He tells the killer in the episode "you're a card, you really are a card...but I love you"
But is he really supposed to be god? Or is he the devil? There are a few things that make me think twice...
When they're sitting at the table playing dominoes (burt and the killer) a few things come up: killer asks "who do you think you are?" Burt replied "who do you think I am?" Which doesn't imply one way or the other until the killer says "go to hell" to which burt replied by asking "are the reservations in your name?" Expressing concern about whether he gets caught...I would say right before that moment he even covers for the killer, as doggett walks by he sets off the dominoes on the table, which seems to distract doggett JUST enough so he doesn't stop and question the killer. Would God do that?
Finally, the parking garage scene...his trunk full of CD's, which from the conversation we can deduce that he pirated all of that music "thanks to the wondrous world of digital technology I can always make more"...would God pirate CD's? I think not
And just who is he meeting for a game of checkers? The killer? One could assume that, but judging by the killers attitude towards burt I hardly think he would sit down at playa game with him. Oh yeah and there's a little line that burt slips in "I have some nice dance music". Think about god, and think about the devil, who would appreciate some nice dance music more?
Then there's the checkers, at first I thought burt was steering scully and Reyes towards the checkers to help catch the killer, but the more I see this episode I think he's just distracting them from catching them. While scully and Reyes are deep into a match he's dancing around them, as if he's got them doing EXACTLY what he wants, but when Reyes turns the board around, burt gets this look on his face like "uh oh" and of course when Reyes goes on her diatribe about winners and losers and burt snaps his fingers and says "free will". I'm not up on my Christianity that much, but I think the devil is a big fan of free will, maybe I'm over simplifying.
Then when scully is on the phone with Reyes and asks "who was that man?" Reyes replied with "god knows" which doesn't point to one or the other really, but it's there...
There are a few other things, but I really don't feel like getting into it...what's your opinion? I know Wikipedia says that the character is definitely supposed to be god, but I'm skeptical
