Season 6’s “Two Fathers/One Son” episodes are mythology episodes that I actually enjoy.
They are episodes that really ramp up the stakes due to ramifications of Cassandra Spender’s return and successful transformation into an alien/human hybrid.
While we know from past episodes and the first film the Syndicate were cooperating with Alien Colonists who had a plan to take over the planet with a virus of extraterrestrial origin, we also were introduced to Faceless Alien Rebels who burned their victims. This appeared to imply there are multiple races of aliens. So much mythology and world building happening. The stakes are high.
We also learn the End Game. The collaboration was a stall in order to create a vaccine against the infection to ensure survival for some (namely, the conspirators and their families in which Mulder and Jefferey Spender have an inheritance).
One reveal aspect is revealed. Samantha Mulder was taken as collateral for collaboration (something we already learned previously). But it seems to be painted as an act that would have ensured her survival. However, enter the alien Rebels who are putting an end to the plans. It raises a few questions? Is the colonization inevitable? Do the Rebels actually care? Are they trying to save humanity? We never truly know. All we learn is that the Rebels win and the Syndicate are wiped out, all except CSM, Krychek and Fowley. The stakes were high but not high enough to kill off any of those 3.
It’s a simplistic end to the main conspiracy but the only true major thread left was the whereabouts of Samantha. The mythology truly fell off after these two great, but flawed episodes.
What do you all think?
