How was the mindset of a WWI soldier different than WWII? What were acceptable behaviors and attitudes that became transgressions and vice versa?

In WWI soldiers would charge in large numbers into the enemy after a loud whistle was blown, almost like “get ready, here we come”. In WWII soldiers took cover, flanked the enemy (were ambushes a tactic yet?), moved in smaller units, etc. How did the military norms (what was considered honorable, cowardly, etc.) change? How did those changes come about?
