The North Carolina-class battleship USS Washington fires upon the Kongo-class battleship IJN Kirishima during the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, November 14, 1942. Note the elevation of the barrels and the flash from the 5in guns, indicating the short ranges in which the action was fought.

It comes down to 1 thing. In civilian life we don't necessarily have to fight for our lives when things hit the fan. So you don't expect any "jump scares". On a battleship or any combat situation however, you have to fight to stay alive. It's not till after things have calmed down that you find out you need a new pair of pants. At least that's what i've always been told.
