I'm going up Gearing as my first DD line that I plan on getting the T10, but I'm struggling with the Farragut. The concealment is quite bad and I can't take concealment mod since it is only T6, and don't yet have a good enough captain for CE. The torpedoes have awful range and the guns have terrible pen and arcs, I am just completely lost and am averaging 25K damage per game and I fear that Mahan will bring more of the same. I am mostly just spotting for my teammates and giving them smokes, occasionally I engage with cruisers with my HE at longer ranges to throttle juke. Am I playing the line correctly or am I missing something? I'm writing this on mobile so I can't provide images of my build but I can when I have access to my computer.
Concealment expert on a commander is a game changer. Your first dd line will have a little learning curve because you have to learn to pick when to be aggressive and when to back off. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes - you’re still at T6.
Bad firing arcs are a pretty common occurence for US boats in general - even I had a tough time trying to figure out leading when grinding up the Des Moines line (and I still have a little trouble leading really fast targets still even w/ a 5 second reload). Try to abuse islands for shell arcing. Zoom out one or two ticks when aiming so you can keep spatial awareness and see whats going on.
I can’t speak much about the Gearing line beyond the Farragut because I never grinded past it, but I am currently grinding to the Kitakaze right now. And I have had some pretty great games in the Farragut.
Just keep playing and getting better game sense! Watching dd gameplay also helps a lot.
