For context, I work for a very large Brokerage company. I've been at this company over 17 years. I've survived layoffs, overseas workers taking our jobs, pay cuts and only two paid sick days. Despite all this, due to how long I've worked there, I have a good 5 weeks vacation (along with benefits and an RRSP) and the pay is above par for where I live.
When COVID started we all began working from home full time. Note that we had the ability before but it was only used maybe once a year if there was a severe storm.
Cut to 2022 where they start forcing us back into the office twice a month.
Keep in mind this office is extremely disgusting, dirty, full of mice, and the air system never gets cleaned. The bathroom smells like sewage constantly and the front door is always broken so it won't open. The internet there is terribly slow and it takes me 10 minutes to log in, where it takes me a minute at home. I have no car and so my boss has to come pick me up, which is insane, because the bus doesn't run at that time.
Add on the commute plus food and waking up earlier, it makes no sense to even be going in. Plus the fact I have extreme anxiety and had to go on medical leave for it in the past.
I finally tell my boss today that I am not going in any more, citing the reasons above causing extreme anxiety, along with the fact half the bridge to work is closed causing a 30 minute commute.
She basically freaks out and says it's mandated. I calmly ask where it says that. I get told her boss is mandating it and we should be lucky we only have to go in twice and I should feel lucky my boss carpools me when we go. I was flabbergasted. I thanked her for the drive but said it had nothing to do with her. That I'm telling the company what I need in order to do my job. I also said others feel the same way about going in which is true, but I was scoffed at. She laughed at me and said that if I don't go in then it's considered as I didn't show up.
After that less then great reaction, I had to actually provide personal information I should not even have to give, to garner any kind of sympathy from her. Without saying much it's in regards to pre-cancer cells removed that has come back for a third time. Once that was brought up she told me I could work from home tomorrow and we deal with the rest later.
I plan on getting a note from the doctor to perm work from home, citing stress, hoping this helps me. Is there anything else I can do to push this? Any advice? Have you gone thru this? Note that we already have one person on stress leave due to this workplace.
