I am writing this because a couple of people asked me how to spot the scams. And I ONLY apply to remote jobs. So, I have gotten pretty good at spotting a scam.
1) If it sounds too good to be true, it is. If they only require Highschool diploma, but will pay you 25 an hour, it is a scam. (If the post says you need to have a bachelor's degree and the pay is 15 an hour it is legit).
2) Most of the "travel guides want to book remote trips, plan vacations and weddings" is a scam. I see so many of those jobs. And it's an obvious scam. One or two of them might be legit. But what is the point if 98 percent are scams?
3) On LinkedIn specifically, anyone without a profile picture, is probably trying to scam you. It does not matter if the account is 12 years old, if there is no profile picture, it is a scam. That is how you EASILY spot at least half the scams on LinkedIn.
4) If you apply to something, and the recruiter contacts you with a generic Gmail, yahoo mail or outlook. It is a scam. I repeat, if the recruiter is not using a company email address, it is a scam.
5) If the grammar in the post is bad, or the post has a phone number in it, it is a scam.
6) If the recruiter tries to hire you without a video interview, or skill test, it is a scam. Shitty remote positions will make you do a skills test only. Decent companies who actually pay you or offer benefits, always do both. (Scammers never make you do a skills test. They just try to hire you ASAP to get your info)
7) No remote recruiters will ask you to buy anything. EXCEPT, I saw one legitimate startup call center and anyone who worked for them had to pay for their own background check. It was like 35$ or something reasonable.
8) If they try to send you a startup check for equipment it is a scam.
Got any other tips on how to spot a remote hiring scam?
