Hi. 22M here. I have a degree in Computer Science/Cybersecurity. I got a job in the summer full time. I make pretty solid money. I can't stand the team I'm on. I will switch teams in two months, but there's no guarantee it's a team I will enjoy at all, and I don't have a ton of control over the role I get switched to, and many of the available ones are similar to my current role. I find it difficult to push myself to do work and even go into work some days.
Context: I am in a hybrid role, where I need to be in office 60% of the time for the first year of my job. I struggle to hit that number. My commute is about 30 minutes. There is no closer office.
I work in a role that is pretty much self-driven work. I work on a 24/7 coverage team (I work 9-6) and a solid half the team, including my manager I report to being based in India (I'm US EST), so I don't interact with people on my team much at all.
The work I do feels like I am completely wasting my degree. I haven't written a line of code in 6 months, and I feel like I could easily do this job without any higher education. It just feels like I'm wasting my own abilities, and I just have no motivation to do the work or show up to work on time, because there's no sort of accountability of being on time or actually doing work until they review your metrics quarterly.
I am technically an above average performer at the role, but the quality and quantity of my work has decreased recently. I have no external or internal motivators to succeed at this job outside of being paid every 2 weeks so I can literally survive.
Any advice on how to motivate myself to just want to mentally and sometimes physically even show up?
