[Help] [Novice] Trying to create a single sticky that changes daily

For this church's site I'm trying to create a "Word of the Day" post that would change every day. I think it should be as simple as creating a sticky post and then creating a new post and then adding and removing sticky but I'm wondering if there is a method for creating a sticky such that only the latest sticky is shown.

I was almost competent in WP 2.6-2.7 but a lot has changed in 3.0 so while I don't mind getting my hands dirty, so to speak, I might need a refresher first before I start creating themes from scratch again.

Should I look into a sticky plugin or is that something I should be able to do out of the box?
