I'm considering reversing a 301 redirect. Are there any significant drawbacks?
Hi everyone. About 8 months ago, I redirected my site abc(dot)com to a more brandable domain, xyz(dot)com, using a 301 redirect. Now, I want to switch back to the original domain.
I know that 301 redirects are typically permanent, but has anyone reversed one before? Any tips or advice?
I've found two possible approaches:
- Remove the 301 Redirect Rule from the .htaccess file or server settings of the original domain to cancel the redirect.
- Set up a 301 Redirect from xyz(dot)com back to abc(dot)com. This could create confusion and an unnecessary loop, but I've heard it might be a preferred option.
If I just remove the 301 redirect, will the SEO value stop transferring to the second site after a few months? Some people have mentioned that because 301s are permanent, this might not be the case.
Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!
